The term number theory can refer to a broad range of mathematical topics. At its most basic level, it simply refers to the study of whole numbers and how they interact with one another. The word “theory” in this case indicates that no one has proven some of these findings, and so they remain theories until, let us say, a new proof is found. One important branch is called computational theory or computational number theory; this area of study has given rise to some very important results that we now use everyday as computers have become more sophisticated in their ability to handle math problems.
